on the side...
- Convert all fonts to outlines.
- First prize for us is a print ready PDF, but we can accept open files when supplied with all images and fonts.
- Certain pantone colours simply cannot be matched on a CMYK device.
- RGB preferable to CMYK: files are up to 25% smaller & colours are richer than cmyk. It's also easier to colour correct in RGB. (NB: colours lost by converting to CMYK cannot be recovered).
- Avoid light tints on very fine copy (ideally small type should have no less than 80% of at least one process colour (except yellow).
- Black should never be made up of more than 30% of any of the three other process colours + 100% K
- Gradients created in photoshop reproduce better than vector based ones.
- Include noise or texture to avoid "banding" in large areas of flat or light colour.
- Avoid rasterizing copy, vector graphics produce the crispest results for text and fine detail.
- Do not select colours on screen, use CMYK charts as reference in jobs where colour is critical.
- Always see a printed colour proof before going ahead with a full print run, e-proofs are great for checking copy and layout but not for checking colour or material quality.
